• The National Honor Society (NHS), established in 1921, is the premier national organization recognizing high school students who have demonstrated strong character and excelled academically while taking active roles in leadership and service. Membership in the Clayton chapter of the NHS is a FACULTY-AWARDED HONOR presented to those students who have exemplified outstanding character, academic achievement, leadership, and service. Requirements are rigorous for membership in our chapter of the National Honor Society. 
     
    Each National Honor Society member
    should show evidence of the following merits
    .


    The student who demonstrates SCHOLARSHIP

    • works at a consistently high level in his or her classes  and achieves a 3.7 GPA by the beginning of the first semester of the senior year

    The student who demonstrates CHARACTER

    • recognizes and accepts responsibilities and maintains self-discipline and stability
    • takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
    • demonstrates cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, courtesy, fairness, and respect for others
    • demonstrates trustworthiness, integrity, and academic honesty

        The student who demonstrates LEADERSHIP

    • contributes to the civic life of the school; demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
    • exemplifies positive attitudes and inspires positive behavior in others
    • is a leader in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, at work, and in the community
    • works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
    • is resourceful in making suggestions and finding solutions

    The student who demonstrates SERVICE

    • shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students
    • volunteers dependable and well-organized assistance
    • is gladly available and is willing to sacrifice in order to serve others
    • cheerfully renders any requested service to the school outside school hours
    • mentors others; provides volunteer service to benefit the wider community
