Wydown Middle School sixth-grade students performed a Readers Theater rendition of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination for their classmates on Friday, April 19. Wydown Middle School sixth-grader Julian Evans’ poster, “You Are What You Eat,” has been selected by the St. Louis County Department of Health as the top design submitted at the sixth-grade level in its 2013 Healthy Living Poster/Slogan Contest. Current Clayton Mayor Harold Sanger, former Mayor Linda Goldstein and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council honored the 14 student winners of the Clayton Centennial Contest at a special reception on Monday, May 13. These students were celebrated for their essays, artwork and videos submitted in the contest to depict their answers to the question, “What will Clayton be like in 100 years?” Click

WMS seventh-graders participated in a national day of activism on March 20 to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, encourage their peers to remain tobacco-free and urge their elected officials to take action to protect children from tobacco. The news of the devastation caused by the tornado in Oklahoma on May 20 is both shocking and saddening. Our hearts and thoughts are with the community of Moore and the surrounding areas impacted by the tornado, especially the students, staff and families at Briarwood and Plaza Towers Elementary Schools. Wydown Middle School sixth-graders Kedar Venkatesh and Jesus Madrazo earned blue ribbons at the 2013 Academy of Science – St. Louis’ Science Fair, and sixth-grader David Corbo received a white ribbon. The projects were judged on May 1 and were on display at Queeny Park from May 3-4. Kedar’s project also was selected for a special award from Monsanto, which included a $200 prize.
WMS students have been learning why healthy snacking combined with regular exercise is important for their physical and mental well-being. In conjunction with the school's Fuel Up to Play 60 grant, Chartwells Food Service Director Bridget Jordan presented to all of the P.E. classes to discuss healthy snacking and moving for at least 60 minutes each day. Choir Teacher Jerry Estes has been selected to receive the Yale University School of Music’s prestigious 2013 Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award. This award is presented biennially to 50 music educators from across the country who are selected based on their outstanding accomplishments while teaching music in public schools. The School District of Clayton will save an estimated $651,000 over the next 20 years while reducing its impact on the environment with the installation of eight arrays of solar panels on six buildings across the District. The Board of Education approved a 20-year lease proposal from Microgrid Solar, which includes Microgrid’s donation of an array of solar panels at Wydown Middle School to support the school's application for LEED® Gold certification.
