Another incident, another quiet day
Late Monday night another piece of graffiti, containing a threat, was discovered in a boy's bathroom. This threat did not target a group or have a specific time, though it was more specific in its intent, that there was a bomb in the school. Within an hour the bomb dogs were at CHS and within an hour of that they had searched the entire school, clearing it of any threat. Tuesday we awoke to a calm, quiet day.
One of the aspects of Clayton that I truly appreciate is its small town quality. The Clayton Police department has been a partner in handling these events. They have been responsive, supportive and helpful. Within an hour of discovering the graffiti last Friday we were in the Chief's office planning school safety and a coordinated response. Monday night, within a very short window we had a large number of officers on hand assisting in the clearing of the building and securing it, as well as the work they did throughout the night and the next day.
One particular aspect of the cooperation between the CSD and the CPD is the School Resource Officer program. Our SRO, John Zlatic is a Clayton police officer assigned to CHS. There a second one at Wydown, and the two of them work with the elementaries. His presence at CHS is a positive benefit on a daily basis, and integral when situations like these arise. We are fortunate to have a tremendous person in that role (it doesn't hurt that he's decided to become a teacher--social studies no less).
So, next time you see a police officer, thank him or her, they do hard work, they do it well, and I appreciate what they bring to us.
